Lower Manhattan’s street pattern reflects its organic growth. Broadway follows a Lenape trail. Wall Street follows the 1653 palisade. Broad Street was a canal. Streets south of Wall Street follow Dutch property lines and waterfront access patterns, while the 1811 Commissioner’s Plan imposed the grid above Houston Street.
