Sugar Houses of Manhattan
Summary
Large brick or stone warehouses used for refining sugar, several of which became notorious British prisons during the Revolution. The Rhinelander, Bayards, Courtlandt’s, Roosevelt’s, and Seaman’s sugar houses were prominent 4-story structures. During British occupation 1776-1783, thousands of American prisoners of war were held in these buildings under terrible conditions.
